THE INTERNATIONAL CAREER OF ELS JOGLARS

The first international performance of Els Joglars was in 1967, in Zurich. Since then, the group has regularly participated in European and some American festivals. Hardly a year has gone by without Els Joglars taking one or other of their productions beyond the frontiers of Spain, be it to appear in festivals or to present particular performances as a natural extension of a tour. Not all the performances abroad have had the same impact. Some, perhaps, have not had any. There have been some performances that you would be hard pushed to distinguish from a ‘bolo’ in any small rural village or ‘provincial’ setting; others, however, have at least enabled the members of the group to travel. Nevertheless, it is clear that Els Joglars were the first Catalan company to achieve an international name and the first to be regularly in demand and contracted by European programmers and entrepreneurs of the world of theatre. And naturally this has not simply ‘happened, but rather is the result of the fact that during these twenty years of performing internationally there have been key moments, performances that, far from going unnoticed, contributed decisively to turning Els Joglars into a group that is internationally renowned.
